Guidelines For Managing Reveilleâ Bluegrass
in Warm Season Grass Areas

FYI – Reveilleâ is a cross between a Kentucky Bluegrass and a Texas Bluegrass. It was selected from hundreds of different crosses. This selection was based partially on its ability to survive Texas summer heat and drought with no added input of water. Reveilleâ does not tolerate excessive irrigation.

Soil – Reveilleâ has been grown successfully in a wide range of soil types and conditions. Two exceptions to this statement are soils with excessive levels of salts and soils that do not have proper drainage.

ShadeResearch has shown that Reveilleâ will perform similarly to Turf-Type Tall Fescue in shade. Remember each shade situation has its own unique variables which effect success and all grass species were naturally selected from areas with full sun.

Timing – Reveille® has been successfully transplanted by sod throughout the year. At this time we are recommending planting by sod only during the fall, winter and spring.

Fertilization – A pre-plant fertilization is desirable. A blended fertilizer at a rate that adds about one pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet applied to the surface of the soil works well. You may apply about 4 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year during the active growing period for Reveille®, fall, winter and spring. Avoid fertilization during the heat of summer. A light application of iron may be made to improve summer color.

Water –Begin watering as soon as the sod is laid. The soil surface must be kept moist but avoid standing water and saturated areas. As the sod becomes rooted, watering will need to be adjusted. After establishment water infrequently but deeply, filling the soil profile to field capacity and then allowing the soil to dry to nearly the wilt point. Reveille® requires about the same water as common Bermuda. Do not water every day!

MowingDuring the fall, winter and early spring Reveille® may be mowed as low as ¾ - 1inch. Adjust mowing frequency to remove no more than 1/3 of the grass blade length. During the summer, raise the mowing height to at least 2-3 inches. For best results be sure the mower blade is sharp each time you mow.

Summer – Fall, winter and spring are the active growing times for Reveilleâ . As a true cool season grass, Reveille® will appear exceptionally green and lush during this period. In the summer with proper watering it will stay green through the hottest weather. During the summer do not attempt to make Reveille® appear as lush as it does during the fall, winter and spring by increasing watering and fertilization. Excess water and fertilizer will increase the incidence of diseases during the hot summer time period.
